A Concacaf Champions Cup Finals spot was on the line tonight. LAFC had done their part in the first leg, while conceding the away goal, they did just enough to secure a second on the night, giving them the 2-1 aggregate lead coming into Mexico. Now Los Angeles have to face a desperate Toluca side, on the road, find a way to close out the series and lock their spot in the final. What’s more, a win tonight will see them do enough to earn home field advantage, hosting the Champions Cup Final.

The first half went as expected in terms of the way Toluca came out. From the start, they were applying the pressure and putting LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, to the test. While the first half ended scoreless for both sides, it was Toluca that enjoyed a lot of the opportunities as Los Angeles did their best to defend in the early stages. The home side finished the half with 71% possession, putting together 18 shots with seven finding the target and a couple really threatening for the lead. LAFC obviously didn’t have much possession but they also didn’t do much in attack either. They finished the half with just four shots, one on target and Denis Bouanga missing the first really great look at goal he had all first half.
Holding up well enough, there was definitely a sense that playing backs against the wall would only work for so much longer against a Toluca side that was inching closer to that opening goal. It’s important to remember, Toluca have the away advantage, meaning a goal in the second half was just as important for LAFC, as it was for the Liga MX side.
The pestering around the goal eventually earned its reward. Just moments into the start of the second half, Toluca earned a penalty after a late challenge from LAFC defender Ryan Hollingshead. It was Brazilian forward Helinho who stepped up to the spot for Toluca, slotting it past Lloris for the goal taking the lead in the match and equalizing it on aggregate. The real trouble for Los Angeles now, is that the Mexican club owned the away goal tiebreaker as it stood, meaning if the result holds, they will be out of the tournament, right on the doorstep of a final.

A giveaway when trying to get the ball out of their own defensive third, only made things worse for Los Angeles. Defender Everardo López got on the end of the Delgado giveaway, and without a moments hesitation, he sent a screamer from distance that got past a flat-footed Lloris, doubling the lead on the night and taking the aggregate advantage as well.

LAFC were desperately going for the equalizer now, as a goal would eliminate the away goal advantage for Toluca, while putting the match in a position to see extra time. In the waning minutes it looked like another mistake would spell the end for Los Angeles, as defender Ryan Porteous had his pocket picked, but instead of giving up the easy attempt at goal, he stuck a foot out and took one for the team. Already on a yellow, the tackle was enough to see straight red, being sent off and should his team complete the comeback, would keep him out of the final.
Already having to deal with immense pressure all night, LAFC were now a player down and Toluca wasted no time in slamming the door shut on any comeback. In the middle of the six minutes of stoppage time, Toluca caught Los Angeles asleep in the 92nd minute, with Pável Pérez cutting through the LAFC defense, and slotting it past an unaware Tafari who didn’t see forward Paulinho waiting eagerly far post for the easy tap in, making it 3-0 on the night, going up two goals on aggregate.

Just moments later, Toluca once again took the ball off of an Los Angeles player, going on the immediate counter, with Paulinho once again on the finish, driving the final nail through the coffin, sending his side to the Concacaf Champions Cup final, and sending Los Angeles home.

The 4-0 loss is one of the biggest defeats LAFC has suffered all season and it couldn’t have come at a worse time. The loss sends them out of the tournament from the doorstep of the final. A night where they desperately tried to defend their lead, having seen several opportunities to further it, missed. Once again they can only hope for next year as the focus will now shift to getting back into winning form in MLS action.
