The nearly month-long home stand in the MLS is coming to an end for LAFC. Tonight, the team host Portland Timbers in what is the last MLS match of the month, as the team will get set for the Leagues Cup tournament after tonight. Despite a disappointing draw against rival Galaxy their last time out, Los Angeles are riding some pretty solid form as of late, as they look to push the unbeaten run to five matches against the Timbers tonight. One thing is certain coming into tonight, this match will be physical, and we should expect a few cards to fly, such is the football heritage when these two sides clash.

Portland come into Los Angeles just looking for some positives. They have won just once in their last five matches, with one draw and three losses. They have scored four goals in that same span, but have conceded eight to their opponents. They do however, sit just two points behind LAFC and one spot back as they too look to improve their standings going into the postseason push part of the schedule. The one thing they do have on their side coming into this one, is the fact LAFC are going to be short-handed in defense as they deal not only with injuries, but a red card suspension as well. Given how well Portland can get under LA’s skin, there’s the danger that more of those cards are shown tonight.
While Portland’s overall form has been lacking, their form against LAFC isn’t terrible. They have lost just two of their last five meetings, but luckily for Los Angeles, both of those wins came 3-2 while the team was at home. All things considered, the team would love to keep that trend going tonight and take care of Timbers on home soil. As mentioned before, the team come into this one short-handed defensively as they continue to be without Maxime Chanot and Aaron Long, the latter sustaining a season-ending injury, but they also have to be without Eddie Segura who earned a red card in the final moments of their match last time out against Galaxy.
“There are solutions we have on our roster with players who can play out of position” said LAFC Head Coach Steve Cherundolo when asked about the lack of center back options heading into tonight. “We also have, obviously, Kenny [Nielsen] can help us out and so we have a number of solutions that we’ll prepare for this match and our goals remain the same, its still a game we want to win.” This could very well be another one of those defensive-focused matches from Steve Cherundolo where we see five at the back deployed as the team look to avoid conceding early, with the hopes of striking fast with their own attack.
