The time has come to once again put the MLS campaign on pause as LAFC get set to host Mazatlan FC to open Leagues Cup action this evening. The tournament that sees MLS clubs take on Liga MX sides is set to begin this week and Los Angeles will get to start their cup campaign with a pair of home matches. The club look to finish the job this time around, as they reached the finals last season, only to fall to Columbus Crew FC. With form looking better as of late, recent loss to Portland aside, LAFC will have yet another chance to finish the season with some silverware, and perhaps provide a boost to their postseason hopes in domestic play.

We start with Mazatlán, who currently sit in eighth place through three matches of their Apertura season. They are a dead even 1-1-1 through those matches, with their recent outing was a 1-0 loss to Pachuca, who also pay a visit to LAFC for Leagues Cup. Midfielders Alberto Herrera and Jordan Sierra will be the ones to watch for in this match, as they have started off their season in great form and scoring goals. Attackers Nicolas Benedetti and Anderson Duarte will also be important for the LAFC defense to keep tabs on, as they are the focal points of their attack.
LAFC come into this match having won three of their last five matches, with just one loss, the most recent home match to Portland Timbers. Those three wins were all shutouts, as the club have scored nine and conceded four in that five match stretch. “It’s a new competition, everyone starts with a clean slate of no points and no goals scored, so its a situation where you want to get off to a good start” said LAFC Head Coach Steve Cherundolo when speaking to media ahead of tonight. “We have the privilege to play at BMO against a very good squad who has gotten off to a good start in their domestic league.” That home field advantage will be massive for LAFC, who have struggled away from home this season, and with their first two matches of the tournament being played at home, its a great chance to really get off on the right foot.
