Welp, this is it, the end of the road. Tonight, LAFC take the stage one last time, in their third and final match in the FIFA Club World Cup as they close out the group stages, having already been eliminated from advancing. So far, it hasn’t been the best of showings for the Los Angeles side, but they hope to finish strong in their final match. As has been the case all tournament, it wont be easy, as they take on current Group D leaders, unbeaten Brazilian side, Flamengo.

Flamengo have not only secured their spot in the knockout stages, but they have done so in impressive fashion. They currently sit with six points, having won both matches previous, taking down Espérance 2-0, and stunning Chelsea FC in a pretty dominant 3-1 showing that put the world on notice. Now, the Brazilian squad look to make it a clean sweep as they get set to face off with LAFC tonight. All five of their goals throughout this tournament have come from different players, but its midfielders Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Luiz Araujo as well as forward Bruno Henrique, who are usually the ones that offense goes through. Flamengo are riding a 10 match unbeaten run that goes back to their domestic league, and perhaps most impressive, they have only allowed four goals in that same stretch. This is a team that can score often, and is incredibly tricky to breakdown.
“We’ll just have to see how it looks like tomorrow, they are a fantastic team” said LAFC Head Coach Steve Cherundolo when speaking to media ahead of the match. “They play an exciting brand [of football], they play aggressive, want to dominate teams. But in any system, systems have weaknesses, and it’s our job to exploit those. We will do our best.”
It’s been a difficult tournament for LAFC. Results aside, this is a club that wanted to really show the world just how good they can be, a chance to test themselves against some of the best clubs the rest of the world has to offer, and so far, they haven’t been passing the tests. Losses aside, this is a team that has performed far from their typical standard. They have yet to score the goal, have had a penalty denied, struggled to get shots on target, and despite holding strong defensively, have not been able to secure a result. All that said, they can still end on the highest of highs. A win over Flamengo would absolutely open the eyes of many around the globe. Sure, it wont mean advancing, but pride is on the line tonight. A chance to show MLS aren’t the pushovers many assume them to be. It also will go a long way in giving the team confidence as they head into the second half of their MLS campaign, where they absolutely need to make sure the rough outings don’t continue.
