The second of three on the road for Angel City FC is tomorrow afternoon, with the team hoping that third time is the charm as they hunt for their first win of the 2024 campaign in match day three in KC. The team pay their first-ever visit to NWSL’s newest stadium, taking center stage in one of the more anticipated matches of the weekend. While Angel City are looking for their first win, KC Current have yet to drop points, sitting with two very impressive wins to open up their season.

After opening the season with a loss, and securing their first point of the season on the road in last week’s draw, Angel City now look to make it a full set with their first win this weekend. Taking on KC Current, the team look to continue their progression and find that clinical finishing in the final third to lift them to the three points. Just three matches in and the squad is already dealing with some slight injury issues, but still have plenty of potency available to put on some better showings than they have recently. As for those injuries, the silver lining is that none look serious, and with a nice break coming in a few weeks time, the importance is on weathering the storm in the interim, and not getting swept away by the current.
“I think good news for both [Gisele Thompson and MA Vignola]” said Head Coach Becki Tweed. “Gisele has an ankle sprain so its just day-to-day. MA’s is fortunate, nothing too crazy. A couple more weeks for her, you could describe it as bone bruising, but nothing that will keep her out a long period of time.” The good news is that it appears midfielder Rocky Rodriguez should be all set to make her Angel City debut this weekend, but whether or not we see her get a full 90 remains to be seen. She will be welcomed back warmly, providing some much needed bite in the middle of the pitch. The biggest injury news of the week came via the source herself, as ACFC star Christen Press posted photos of her seemingly back in training. Becki Tweed did confirm Press was back with the team fulltime, but there was still no timeline on her return. Still, it is great to see the progress continue as we get even closer to seeing 23 back on the pitch.
How They Look
“This league is a marathon, not a sprint. We can’t get caught up on the what-ifs, we have to focus on the process” said Tweed. “This is game three of a long season. Obviously every time you step out on the field and put a team out your objective is to win, but again its a marathon. We know that we have a process, we know that we have a gameplan, an identity and we have to execute that.” In fairness to them, Angel City have definitely seen improvement over their last two matches. Shooting has improved, albeit slightly, but more importantly, the team as a whole look and feel a lot more comfortable. If they can get the timing down, and get more aggressive in that final third, they should be heading out of KC with a win.
Shooting hasn’t been an issue for the home side, who have already tallied seven goals in the opening two matches. What makes that stat even more impressive, every single scorer of the seven so far has been a different player. Seven different goal scorers shows the lack of fear from everyone on that squad when it comes to taking chances, Shooters shoot and the Current are a squad of shooters. The other side of that coin however, is hey have also allowed five goals. So, despite the hot start, the goal differential isn’t looking too impressive at the moment. It also gives hope to ACFC who have a very stout defense, and enough firepower on the attack to take advantage of any opportunities presented.
