THE NWSL IS BACK! After a month long summer break while England was winning the Euros for a second time, the NWSL and with it Angel City FC, are back for the second half of the season. The break provided a prime opportunity for the club as new Head Coach Alex Straus was able to finally get some quality time with his players to establish the foundation of what he is building, while also integrating some of his tactics into the squad. As he will tell you, he is far from where he wants to be, but the extra preseason for the team has definitely been a good thing, especially when you consider they weren’t idle during the break, as the club also added a few new faces to the mix as well.
It’s a beautiful day for #AngelCityFC soccer 🖤

A quick rundown of where things stand for Angel City coming into this evenings return to action. The team are currently in 11th place in the standings, sitting just three points off the playoff line. Form coming into the break wasn’t the best, as they had lost four of their last five outings, with the latest three results (one draw, two losses) coming with their new head coach at the helm. That said, in a lot of ways, this is the start to a brand new season, so throw any previous form out the window. The team are healthier now, as we have seen the return of midfielder Jun Endo, who featured in the friendlies during the break, scoring against Bay FC. We also have seen Ali Riley get taken off SEI as she prepares for her own return to action in the near future. There is some baby news as forward Claire Emslie announced her pregnancy, which will see her out for the rest of season, but still a very joyous moment for the attacker. The team has also loaded up on new talent with the signings of young rising star midfielder Evelyn Shores, Icelandic international superstar forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir, veteran goalkeeper Hannah Seabert, and recent addition German defender Saras Doorsoun.
As for tonight’s match, they go up against a Seattle Reign side that has also spent the break improving. They made their own big splash, breaking records to sign Mia “Big Fish” Fishel, from Chelsea FC. The Reign went into break with three wins, one loss, and one draw in their last five matches and they currently sit in sixth, just six points above Angel City. However, recent history leans towards Los Angeles, with ACFC having won three of their last five meetings, including the last two outings. History repeating would be a great way for Angel City to get the second half of the season started off on the best of vibes. The biggest key for Angel City tonight will be defensively, with the addition of Sveindís and the return of Jun Endo the attack should be looking a lot more potent, so it will be on the defense to make sure they can keep Seattle and their newest catch, from scoring goals of their own.
