It’s Monday night football for Angel City FC tonight, with the club back at home for what is the last short home stand of the season. With just six matches left, and a crucial match against the Portland Thorns incoming, tonight could very well determine the playoff fate for Los Angeles, who desperately need a win just to stay in the fight.

Preserving Playoffs
The Portland Thorns come into this match in arguably their worst form we’ve seen from them in years, while they desperately cling to their seventh place playoff spot. The team has lost four of their last five matches, having scored just three goals in that span. Thorns are sitting in seventh, barely holding on to their playoff spot. They are just two points clear of Racing Louisville, who are in the final spot for the postseason, as well as Bay FC who continue to win and wait for someone to slip up for the leapfrog. Do not let the poor form lull you into a trap though, this is still a team capable of getting a result, and with Angel City slowly falling off the pack, all they need is a point on the road to make the playoff push that much more dire for Los Angeles.
Must-win, officially
Angel City for their part, come into the match only four points off Racing Louisville in eighth, but six points from Portland in seventh, making this match that much more important. A loss, and Portland move nine points clear, as well as providing teams like Bay FC and Louisville to also pull away with favorable results this weekend. Even a draw keeps ACFC seven points clear, and with just five matches remaining after tonight, would put them in a real tough spot to close out the season. Luckily, Angel City have proven they can beat this side, having won in their last two meetings with one the 5-1 rout that served as climax to their playoff push last season. What’s more, Portland come into this match without Hina Sugita and Sophia Smith who are both missing tonight with injury. This really is a massive opportunity for the gritty LA side to make up some ground after their last two losses to those around them in the playoff hunt.
