Rivalry weekend is in full swing in the NWSL as several teams will be taking on opponents that are either established, or budding rivalries. For Angel City FC tonight, they will be heading to San Diego to take on a team that has been viewed as a rival since they came into the league, San Diego Wave. Angel City continue to look for the first win under new Head Coach Alex Straus, and if you can’t get that first win in your first match, the next best option is getting three points on the road, against a rival.

San Diego has lost just one of their last five, and while their form hasn’t been overly spectacular, it has been consistently solid. They have been getting goals from all over as well. Leading team scorer Adriana Leon leads the charge, but forwards Kimmi Ascanio and Delphine Cascarino are close behind with three goals as well as a litany of scattered goals and tons of assists from the defense. A true team effort to get results.
Angel City is a different story. The team has struggled defensively this season, and as of late, has seen a struggling run of form. They haven’t won a match since early May, and despite the long break and new Head Coach, have seen some of the same issues continue to rear their head. The silver lining, is despite the final scores, the ideas are clear and they have been evident. The team just needs to find that little bit extra needed to do enough to get the result in the end. Perhaps that little extra needed can come in the form of motivation to beat the rivals from further south.
