Outside of the Galaxy match, this was probably the first match circled when the schedule was released. The first meeting with the Vancouver Whitecaps will see LAFC return to the scene of heartbreak. Nearly a year ago the team were in Vancouver, setting up an MLS Cup Playoff comeback for the ages, only to miss crucial penalties in a shootout that saw Whitecaps eliminate them in the conference semifinals. As much as we would like to say thats old news, it’s a pain that a handful of players will absolutely be thinking about when the two sides clash today, for the first time in 2026.

Going into the summer break, Vancouver looked nearly untouchable. They had won six of their last nine before the pause in action, with two draws and just one loss. Since returning, it’s been a struggle to get the momentum rolling again. While they did advance in the Canadian Championship, getting past Cavalry FC in the quarterfinals, the Whitecaps have yet to win an MLS match since returning to action with one loss and one draw. They come into today sitting atop the Western Conference, for now, tied on points with LAFC but they do have two matches in hand. All that said, should they lose, they will see their top spot overtaken by a team that wants nothing more than to cause them pain and misery at every chance they get. Vancouver will be very shorthanded with several players missing today’s match due to injury, however one player that looks set to feature is striker Brian White, who leads the team with 10 goals, as well as tied for the team lead in assists with two.
This match couldn’t have come at a better time for LAFC. Had this meeting occurred even just a few weeks ago, I’m sure the feeling would have been a lot more anxious, but with how well the team have looked since their return, a visit to Vancouver where it all went wrong last year, might be the last bit of fuel needed to really send this club streaking in the second half of the season. Los Angeles come into this match riding a four match win streak, with three of those wins coming since MLS restarted, having conceded just one goal in the same span. Not only are the team getting results, but since the restart, forward Heung-Min Son has scored in every match he has played in and will come into this match fresh off his MLS All-Star MVP performance, where he scored a brace against the Liga MX All-Stars. Not just a chance for some revenge for last year, but more importantly, a chance to make a statement and finish the weekend sitting atop the Western Conference for LAFC.
