Concacaf Champions Cup aside, this will undoubtedly be the biggest test LAFC have faced so far this season in MLS, and it doesn’t make it easier that they are on the road. Vancouver currently sit comfortably atop the Western Conference standings. The Whitecaps have lost just one match this season, and are currently riding a ten match unbeaten run with that loss coming all the way back at the end of March. This is also the club that eliminated the Inter Miami side that took out LAFC, as Vancouver are the MLS representatives in Concacaf Champions Cup Final this year. Stacking the deck even more in the opponent’s favor, the last time LAFC took a trip to Vancouver was last year’s MLS Cup Playoffs, where the Whitecaps came away with the 3-0 win. For one of the few times in their history, LAFC come into a match as true underdogs.
That said, LAFC have started to show signs of life after a rough start to the season that saw them eliminated from Champions Cup prematurely, and saw them slide a bit in the MLS standings. Now, the club are focused on the league and are on a four match unbeaten run. More importantly, they are starting to score goals again having found the back of the net nine times in their last four matches. They also hold the edge historically over Whitecaps with 12 wins and five draws in their 23 meetings. This match could very well be a preview of an MLS Cup Playoff matchup, so for LAFC, this is another chance to reassert themselves as one of the top contenders for the trophy.
