If there is one Mexican side that absolutely has supreme confidence when stepping up against Los Angeles, it’s Toluca. Sure, the last time they were in LA they were on the losing end of the first leg of the Concacaf Champions Cup, but they more than made up for it with a 4-0 thrashing at home to overcome the deficit and dump LAFC out of the competition. Lately, the Liga MX side has been in great form, sitting third in the Liga MX standings and coming fresh off a 3-0 win over Seattle Sounders just a few days ago. Midfielder Jesús Gallardo and forward Alexis Vega will look to lead the offense against an LAFC defense that can be very tough to break down.
Speaking of the black & gold, this is a must-win if they want any chance at advancing past the group stage. Several MLS sides have secured all six points, meaning LAFC will need a win if they want to keep pace, but they will most definitely have their work cut out for them. Head Coach Marc Dos Santos already confirmed in a pre-match press conference that we will see the return of Hugo Lloris between the posts, but he did also mention we will likely see less Bouanga and Son. Considering the duo is finally starting to find their rhythm again after a long dry spell, perhaps limiting minutes in a big match like this isn’t the smartest. That said, the team will need much more than just the two superstars to get past a Toluca side that would relish being a big reason this side didn’t advance in this tournament, after eliminating them in Concacaf Champions Cup. If we are to see a bit of a rotated side, players like Jacob Shaffelburg and Tyler Boyd will need to step up big time if the team is to come away with the win at home.
