It was an inaugural season to remember for San Diego FC. Their first-ever MLS campaign saw them finish the regular season atop the Western Conference, and making a postseason run that saw them reach the Western Conference Finals, where they eventually lost to Vancouver Whitecaps. This year however, the sophomore slump is all too real. San Diego come into this match fighting just to have a shot at one of the last playoff spots, currently sitting in 13th place. Since returning from World Cup break SDFC have seen improved form, and they will need every bit of it as they aim to keep their unbeaten run against LAFC going on the road tonight.
It may not feel like it given the slight taste of disappointment with how Leagues Cup went, but LAFC are actually in the middle of some excellent form. In the seven matches since returning from break, the black & gold have yet to see defeat. Four wins, three draws in that span, as the team continue to push to regain the top spot in the West. San Diego provides a rare opportunity for LAFC, as they are the only MLS team yet to lose to Los Angeles. Sure, they are just two years old, but after three matches, to remain unbeaten against this LAFC side, is impressive. This is the second match of the season with the two sides playing to a draw back in May.
