The beginning of the end. Usually so ominous, a phrase that oozes tension and evokes anxiety, this time a proven fact. At least it is for LAFC Head Coach Steve Cherundolo. The man at the helm of the black & gold, the MLS Cup and US Open Cup winner, is calling it quits. Yesterday, Cherundolo announced this would be his last season in Los Angeles, as he plans to step down at season’s end. However, there will be plenty of time to pontificate on his tenure, as tonight the team have to fully focus on their trip to Portland to take on the Timbers. The team have one goal now, finish this season as strong as possible and with as many trophies as possible, and that begins tonight.

After a shaky start to the season, the Timbers have seemed to found their stride the last month. They have been unbeaten in their last five matches, with two draws and three wins. Goals are flowing for the Portland side as well, having scored 11 goals in the same five match span. Timbers have been doing well at home this season, with only one loss and one draw, winning the rest, which isn’t by far and away the most dominating, but it does help them for this match. While LAFC won their last meeting in Los Angeles, the last two meetings in Portland have ended in a draw and Timbers win. The good news for LA, they seem to find ways to get under the skin of the Timbers, with the last two matches seeing a player for Portland getting sent off with a red card.
Los Angeles have their work cut out for them to say the least. They come into this match just looking for some consistency, and some confidence. Last time out saw the team put away San Jose Earthquakes in convincing fashion, with Denis Bouanga even finding his way onto the scoresheet. The team have lost three of their last five, but hope the latest win can be a boost as they hit the road. That is the real concern this evening, being away from home. LAFC have just one win with three losses when playing away from Los Angeles this season. You know what they say though, no time like the present, and there is no better time than now for the team to get on track and start finding ways to win on the road, even if it is ugly to start.
