Clash of the conferences meets midweek madness tonight as LAFC are back at home for what will be the only time in September, as they take on New York Red Bulls. The MLS Cup Playoffs are just a stone’s throw away and right now, the real concern for Los Angeles isn’t so much will they make the playoffs, but how deep will their run be should they continue to struggle for form as they have done for over a month. It’s been well over a month since their last MLS win, so what better time to kickstart a run than at home.

New York comes into this one in similar form to Los Angeles. Their last win in MLS action was August 1st, with three of their five matches since, ending in a loss, with two draws. Despite the horrendous run of form, they come into Los Angeles with everything to play for, currently sitting just outside the playoff line, but equal on points with Philadelphia Union, who reside in the final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference. While they haven’t found the goal with consistency as of late, the main threats to keep eyes on are forwards Jorge Ruvalcaba and Julian Hall, who have combined for 16 of the team’s 32 total goals this season.
Much like the last Eastern Conference opponent, there isn’t much history between these two sides. This will be just the fifth meeting all-time between these two clubs, the last time was back in 2024, in a match that ended in a 2-2 draw. The only time NYRB has beaten Los Angeles was 2018, in their first-ever meeting during LAFC’s inaugural season. Now, both teams come into tonight looking to improve on their playoff positioning. July 25th. That was the last MLS win for LAFC. August 8th was their last win in any competition, after taking down Toluca in Leagues Cup. The silver lining is at least this team hasn’t been on a losing run, so while too many draws are annoying, at least they are keeping firm in the top 4 by earning some points. The team will be without defender Ryan Porteous and midfielder Timmy Tillman who are both listed as OUT with injury, but they still have more than enough to get the full three points at home, before they spend the rest of the month on the road.
