The best thing about soccer, is that over the course of a season, you will see opponents twice. Two chances to make your rivals unhappy, two chances to assert dominance over a club, and in the case of LAFC this weekend, when you fumble one meeting and get humbled, you have that second chance at setting things right. Last time these two teams met, LAFC were in the middle of a balancing act as they tried their best to juggle MLS regular season action and Concacaf Champions Cup competition. Perhaps it was having to split attention, and formulate starting XI based more around resting players than putting out the best squad possible, but the team suffered a one goal defeat away from home at the hands of Houston just a month ago. Now, LAFC are at home, and with no Champions Cup to play in, will be fully focused and giving Houston Dynamo their complete, undivided, attention as they look for some revenge this evening.

The win over Los Angeles sent Dynamo on a bit of a run as of late. Houston have gone unbeaten in their last four matches, with two wins, the lates result a shutout victory over Austin FC. Despite the recent run of form, Houston still sit closer to the bottom of the MLS standings, but in a lot of ways, that tends to make them more dangerous. As we saw last time out, this is a team that has zero fear when playing Los Angeles, and historically, is one of those ‘inferior teams on paper, but absolutely throws LA in a blender every time they meet’ type of opponents for LAFC.
“Houston has been a team that, has always been a difficult opponent for us” said LAFC Head Coach Steve Cherundolo when speaking to media ahead of tonight’s match. “They don’t deviate. It’s a difficult team to defend, and also a difficult team if you don’t play fast, and don’t push the tempo, it’s a difficult team to break down.”
The easy storyline for LAFC coming into this one is revenge. Nothing feels better than getting your get back over a team that bested you previously. That said, there is much more for LAFC than just revenge in this match. Los Angeles have a modest three match unbeaten run going, having shared the points their last two outings. Draws are nice, but wins are best and for an LAFC side still working its way onto the right side of the playoff line, these are the type of matches you absolutely have to win, especially being at home. Unlike the last time out though, LAFC have a full week of training, no other competition to keep them occupied, and will be looking to make a statement no doubt.
“It’s nice to finally play them with a full week of training” said Cherundolo. “Every time we play them it’s always a midweek game, or some strange storm on its way, seems to be the theme. But, it’s nice to have a full week of training to prepare for this game.”
