While we didn’t necessarily get the midweek madness we are used to, we were treated to the annual MLS All-Star match, this year seeing the best from MLS taking on Liga MX All-Stars. If you like goals, this was the match for you, with a total of seven scores, both sides looked clinical on the night. LAFC forward Heung-Min Son continued to improve his form, wearing the captain’s armband for MLS, he was able to bag a first half brace, helping boost his side to the win, while also boosting himself to earning MVP honors on the night.

It didn’t take Sonny long to make an impact on the match, which considering how this season has started out, is a very welcome sign to see for Los Angeles fans who have been waiting for the floodgates to open for the South Korean, and it appears as if they finally have. Midfielder Carles Gil put together a perfectly weighted lob pass that found Sonny on the flank, wide open, in the opponent’s box. After getting the ball Son took his time, analyzed the situation, and before help could arrive, he slotted it past the keeper for the equalizer in the 20th minute.

A feeling so nice, he had to do it twice. It took a whopping three minutes before Sonny was off celebrating another goal, this one to take the lead in the first half. In the 23rd minute, some beautiful passing from the MLS side ended with Carles Gil once again finding Son in the middle of the box, with a perfectly weighted lob pass, this time through traffic. Son didn’t hesitate or wait to analyze this time, putting his laces through it and sending a screamer past the goalkeeper for the second goal of the half, giving MLS the lead, as well as Sonny his brace.

Sonny was the only representative from the black & gold to participate in the MLS All-Star match, logging a very solid 35 minutes after getting the start and the honor of wearing the Captain’s armband. MLS scored a third goal in the first half, then scored a fourth and final goal in the second half to give them a 4-3 win on the night. The first half brace didn’t just help boost MLS to the win, but it helped Son earn 2026 MLS All-Star MVP honors.
From an LAFC perspective, the real win last night was seeing Son continue his incredible form. After all that has happened with the slow start to the season, the poor showing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the struggles to get a single MLS goal, seeing him get back to scoring for fun is a genuine joy. It is also important for Los Angeles as they are right at the halfway point of the season and will need top performances from their star attacker if they are too come away with trophies when the season comes to a close.
