For all intents and purposes, MLS Decision Day for LAFC is going to be a pretty drama free affair. Playoffs have been secured for weeks, a top four finish was locked in a few matches ago, and after their loss to Austin FC on the road last time out, their chances at first place in the West are done. That said, there is still something at stake for the boys as they get set to finish up the regular season on the road against the Colorado Rapids, a chance to finish second in the West, but they will need to take care of business and get a little help elsewhere for that to happen.

Colorado come into this match with everything to play for, and desperate for the win at home. They currently sit just outside the playoff line in 10th place, but tied on points with ninth-placed Real Salt Lake. They too, will need help as Real hold the tiebreaker over them, but should RSL falter and draw or lose, it puts Colorado in a position where they win and they are in. They do have the benefit of being at home, which historically is massive for them against LAFC as all five of their wins in this matchup have come at home. Striker Rafael Navarro will be the one to watch for the Rapids, as he leads the attack and the team with 12 goals this season.
As we mentioned, all that’s left for LAFC to play for, is second-place. If they want to finish behind Vancouver when today comes to a close they will need to win, and will also need San Diego FC to either draw or lose. They could finish the day as low as fourth should they fail to get a win and Minnesota United get a win in their match, but that’s as far as Los Angeles can fall. The good news, they will have Sonny and Denis Bouanga back as the pair have returned with International break ending. The bad news, they are on the road, which when it comes to Colorado Rapids, has not been great historically. You have to go all the way back to 2018, the team’s inaugural season, to find the last time they beat Rapids in Colorado. Four of the last five meetings in Colorado have ended in a Rapids win, with the only result for LAFC in that span being a 0-0 draw in 2023. That said, loss to Austin aside, the form the team has been in the last two months can’t be ignored and with a revitalized attack after the arrival of Son Heung-Min, as well as second place on the line, this team is going to have to prove they can win on the road before the playoffs. No better time like the present to prove just that.
