It’s officially the offseason for LAFC, which means it’s officially player postmortem time! The offseason series where we take a look at players who hit the pitch for Los Angeles FC throughout the 2025 season and discuss the year they had, key moments, and a bit about what could possibly be expected for them in 2026. We kick things off with LAFC goalkeeper Thomas Hasal, who may not have seen the pitch too much this season, but did have a few cameos throughout 2025, while spending a majority of his time with LAFC 2 in the MLS Next Pro 2025 series.

Being a backup goalkeeper in soccer isn’t glamorous. It’s even less glamorous in a league like MLS where, unlike European football, there aren’t too many domestic tournaments to keep squads rotated on a fairly often basis. Competitions like Concacaf Champions Cup or U.S Open Cup have stakes far too high for most teams to want to put out a full squad of young players or reserve players the way a team in the Premier League might do for say the EFL Cup or early stages of the FA Cup. That’s why it’s not surprising to see Hasal not get much valuable play time with LAFC this season.
Thomas Hasal made just two appearances with one start for the LAFC senior team in MLS play this season, logging a lot more minutes with LAFC 2 in the MLS Next Pro 2025 series. Hasal’s lone start in the MLS this season wasn’t his, or the team’s, best showing. It was the 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Seattle Sounders where Hasal started and played a full 90, earning a sub 5 rating, allowing five goals, with subpar passing out the back. Again, he wasn’t the sole reason the team got worked, as the whole squad was looking pretty atrocious away from home early on in the season. His next opportunity came in September as a sub. Starting goalkeeper Hugo Lloris went down with injury and had to be subbed out at halftime with the team leading 3-0 on the road against St. Louis City SC. Hasal stepped in and put in a great shift. He had several big saves to preserve the clean sheet, and looked a lot more comfortable between the posts this time around, logging 45 minutes in this appearance.

Hasal also made two appearances for LAFC during the Leagues Cup competition, both of them starts where he played the full 90 minutes. One, a 2-1 win over Tigres, saw him make five saves, seven recoveries with two key saves in the box. His other appearance was a win over Pachuca that went to penalties. His performance was huge in that match, saving not one, but two penalties in the shootout to help LAFC get past the Mexican side. The 26-year-old goalkeeper also made six appearances on six starts for LAFC 2 during MLS Next Pro, playing a full 90 in each of those matches. He logged 540 minutes, conceding eight goals, securing two clean sheets and averaging a rating of 7.4 according to Fotmob.
Thomas Hasal has firmly planted himself as the backup for LAFC, which again, may not be the most glamorous job, but is very important. His solid performances throughout 2025 also give confidence to the club knowing should anything happen to Lloris, or should they want to rotate the squad, they have a very competent option in Hasal who is now no stranger to big moments. While he may not see a major increase in playing time with LAFC in 2026, it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the new coach comes in looking to rotate more, and give him more opportunities in competitions outside of MLS regular season play.
