With the ‘JAWS’ theme playing in the background, here come LAFC. The team that started off the season in rough shape, struggling on the road, struggling to find the back of the net and just looking to find any semblance of consistency, is on a vintage run as of late. The win last night arguably their biggest, most impressive of the season, not because they blew the doors off their opponent, but because in a match that had them missing prolific goal scorer Denis Bouanga and new megastar signing Son Heung-Min they still pulled off a dominant 2-0 win at home over Toronto FC, extending their win streak to six and making it three straight shutouts as the postseason looms around the corner.

As you would expect, LAFC weren’t as aggressive in attack as they had been in recent weeks, spending most of the first half just figuring out who they are without the ability to feed it to Bouanga or Son and letting them cook. That doesn’t mean they can’t find the back of the net early, or efficiently. While the team finished the first half with just four shots, it was their opening shot that made all the difference. Coming in the 13th minute of the match it was Jeremy Ebobisse who first flashed his defense as he picked clean the Toronto defender as they tried to move the ball around the backline, and with nothing but space, time and the goalkeeper in front of him, Ebobisse got back on the scoresheet with a calm and collected finish for the early lead.

We always talk about how crucial an early goal is in this sport, but that one felt a lot more meaningful. It showed the team that they absolutely could still play their game and find success without the two focal points of the recent run. From that point, the team were happy to lean on their defense that has greatly improved throughout the last two months, despite going through a bit of an injury crisis. The half finished with Toronto keeping 56% of the possession and getting off six shots, but only one found the target and none really felt like a true threat to find the back of the net. While content with playing a bit more defensively with the lead, LAFC weren’t easing their foot off the gas too much.
While Toronto had more possession with 54% in the second half, it was actually LAFC who kept applying the pressure. Toronto only mustered five shots in the final 45 minutes of the match, but Los Angeles was able to tally 13 looks with five hitting the target and more importantly, one finding the back of the net. In the 69th minute it was another error in their own half that did in Toronto. This time it was former LAFC midfielder Jose Cifuentes that couldn’t keep hold of the ball as LA applied pressure, poking it free and finding Frankie Amaya wide open on the right side of the pitch. The midfielder took possession, and with nobody around him, took his time to find his shot, going near post and slotting it past the keeper for his first-ever goal for LAFC and the second goal of the night. While it was still early in the match, it very much felt like the dagger needed to secure the three points on the night, and it was.

Again leaning on their defense, LAFC were able to see out the win and did so with yet another clean sheet. The win made it six wins running, while the shutout was their third straight. As playoff soccer approaches, the win also put LAFC just one point behind San Diego for the top spot in the Western Conference. Unfortunately, they will need a bit of help to take that top spot, as if both Vancouver Whitecaps and LAFC win out, it will be Vancouver who sneaks into the top spot by a point, but if the Whitecaps find themselves stumbling while Los Angeles win their final two matches, it will be LA right back where they feel they belong, sitting as the best team in the West.
