Just one step away. One more round and LAFC would find themselves back in a Concacaf Champions Cup final. Advance one more time, and the club would be just 90 minutes away from potentially securing their first trophy of the season. That one more step, however, will be more like a mountain as the team host Liga MX side Toluca in the first leg of the Champions Cup semifinals. While at their best, LAFC can absolutely beat anyone, the team hasn’t necessarily been at their best in recent matches. That said, they are at home where, San Jose result aside, they are typically a lot more comfortable, turning BMO into a fortress. They will need to do it again, because so far Toluca has been the best team in the tournament. A crisp, clear, Los Angeles evening set the stage for the big clash, as both sides looked to establish footing in the first leg, to go into Mexico with the advantage.

The atmosphere was befitting the occasion all things considered. Midweek matches can be hard to fill BMO, but this time around, there were hardly any empty seats, with fans of Toluca filling in plenty of away section spots, and the 3252 showing up en mass to see their side make a statement and gain the upper. hand in the first leg. Through the first 10 minutes of the match, it was a bit of a feeling out process, mixed with a lot of physical play from both sides. These teams knew how important that first goal would be, and both came out looking to be the ones to score it early on.
LAFC had two of the better looks at goal through the first 20 minutes of the match, both coming from superstar striker Heung-Min Son. The first attempt was escorted out of play when two defenders closed in on him, but the second attempt saw him get a shot off, but it wasn’t on target, skipping wide of the goal. It was still a sign from the home side that there were goals to be had and they could be the ones to snatch them.
As the first half started to come to an end, Toluca were doing better in finding their chances, with a couple of balls that nearly found their targets, but weren’t threatening enough to cause real issues. After a few more close looks for LAFC, the halftime whistle blew and both sides went into break scoreless and even. The breakthrough goal was definitely there, it was just a matter of who would be the one to find it.

In a lot of ways, the pressure was on for LAFC as a draw in this first leg would absolutely benefit Toluca, who have the benefit of hosting the second leg in Mexico, where the results haven’t always been favorable for MLS teams. Luckily for the black & gold and their fans, the team understood the assignment. In the 50th minute some great passing, and very favorable bounces ended with Son getting a touch on the ball and setting it up perfectly for Timothy Tillman who didn’t need a second invitation to send the ball screaming past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Having figured out a way through the Toluca defense once, they seemed to have unlocked the attack. Just minutes after the first, Son once again went on the attack. He cut through defenders eventually finding David Martinez. The latter laid the ball off to defender Sergi Palencia who put on a perfect cross in front of goal that got past one LAFC attacker, only to find Shaffelburg at the far post and he guided the ball into the back of the net to seemingly double the lead. Seemingly, because the goal went to VAR and upon review they determined the first player to miss the ball, was offside and tried to play the ball enough to warrant the call. The score stood at 1-0 for LAFC.
The disallowed goal injected new life into Toluca, who suddenly realized the dangerous position they were in. In the 73rd minute a couple of passes sliced through the LAFC defense and ended up on the feet of midfielder Jesús Angulo who took one shot and sent it curling just past the outstretched Hugo Lloris for the equalizer. The goal didn’t just even the match, it put Toluca in the drivers seat for the time being, now having the always important away goal.

Just when it looked like LAFC would have to settle for another disappointing result, the team were gifted a free kick in a very dangerous position just outside the box. Sonny stepped up to take the kick and he sent it towards goal where defender Nkosi Tafari was waiting and in the perfect position to get just enough of his head on it to nudge it over the line for the goal and late winner. The crowd erupted and you could feel the huge sigh of relief in the building as the ball hit the back of the net.

What started as a physical chess match, ended with a flurry of attempts and some critical goals late. Toluca scored, giving them the away goals advantage (for now) while LAFC were able to dig deep and find the winner before the clock struck zero. Now, the black & gold will head to Mexico for the second leg up 2-1 on aggregate, with a chance to get an away goal or two of their own, as they look to seal the deal and get themselves into the Concacaf Champions Cup Final.
