On what was the hottest, muggiest, most humid day of the summer, LAFC were back in action for some midweek madness. While temps cooled by kickoff, it was still well into the mid-90’s when the ball got rolling. For just the fifth time ever the black & gold were taking on Eastern Conference side, NY Red Bulls. At this point it feels like a broken record, but Los Angeles come into tonight looking to log their first MLS win in over a month.

The early stages of the match were a bit of a chess game. Both sides were poking and prodding, but neither side were really going for it. Through 20 minutes there had been a combined four shots and possession was nearly split right down the middle. Despite the slow-paced start, LAFC showed why they are so dangerous because like a snake in the grass they can coil and strike quickly and did just that. In the 21st minute a shot sent in from Heung-Min Son was saved but not controlled and ball landed right at the feet of teenage midfielder Jude Terry, who put his laces through it without hesitation, sending it past the keeper for the lead early.

As expected, once the goal came, LAFC were content to give up possession and play a lot more patient. They finished the half with fewer possession, but leading in all other categories, notably shots (8), touches in opposition’s box (17) and most importantly goals scored (1). Despite taking the lead into the halftime break, LAFC were likely to come out for the second half looking for more. It was very clear they were the more threatening team in the first half, but letting Red Bulls hang around is not what they want to be doing. Putting the match away early in the second should have the side looking more aggressive in the early stages of the half.
Through 60 minutes, not much changed. The visitors decided their younger prospects had experienced enough and with over 30 minutes in regulation, they brought out their big guns. LAFC were still content on just letting the minutes dwindle down, not really putting emphasis on their attack, comfortably defending against New York. Unfortunately, the remainder of the match was a bit dull. Red Bull NY were dealing with injury issues, as players were going down too often for comfort, while LAFC were just happy to grind out the win at home.
Through 80 minutes the score remained the same, LAFC added just three shots to their tally, and while they were happy to defend, they were still finding moments here and there to get good looks at goal to score a second. Wirth just four minutes of stoppage time, the visitors started to turn up the pressure as it looked like LAFC were ready to just get out of there, but their efforts weren’t enough in the end. LAFC scored their second and final goal of the night with one of the last moments of the match. A great ball into the box found new arrival from Bayern Munich, forward Armindo Sieb who awkwardly got a shot off, but had enough on it to send the ball screaming past the keeper for the dagger, securing the three points for his new team. The goal was his first for LAFC, coming on what was his home debut for the club.

The final whistle blew and Los Angeles finally logged their first win in MLS since July 25th. It couldn’t have come at a better time as all the teams around them in the standings had great results as well, so this keeps them in third place in the Western Conference. The team now get set for three-straight matches away from home, starting with Sporting KC.
