The MLS regular season has reached its final stretch, with LAFC having just ten matches remaining, we have officially reached the postseason push. That makes this stretch of matches all the more critical, and with the team playing on the road for a big chunk of their next handful of matches, it was always important for them to shake off the poor form away from home they’ve had all season, and start getting some wins. While the first half on the road against the Revs looked like a lot more of the same, the team flashed a vintage second half performance to get the win away from home and start what they hope, is a strong finish to the season as they prepare for playoffs.

The first half of the match ended scoreless, with both sides not really doing much. LAFC kept more of the possession, but was New England that got off more shots, but even they only finished the first 45 with four shots and only two on target. They had two corners, and an xG of 0.12. LAFC didn’t fare any better, the black & gold had an xG of just 0.08, earned just one corner and had two shots with none on target. It had looked like, once again, Los Angeles had put themselves in a very awkward position on the road. Then, the second half started and for the first time in a while, we saw that classic second half surge from LAFC.
In classic fashion, it was New England who held more of the possession in the second half, but it was LAFC that turned up the aggression, started to find chances and most importantly, were making the most of those chances. It took 51 minutes, but LAFC were finally able to break through the New England defense and find the opening goal. As the defense was trying to get the ball away from goal and avoid the threat, the ball trickled its way to Mark Delgado near the top of the box and he needed just one touch to fire a rocket into the back of the net. An absolute screamer for the lead, Delgado put LAFC firmly in the driver’s seat.

The team was able to keep the home side from finding the equalizer and it looked like Los Angeles was set to come away with a gritty one goal win on the road. However, as time ticked away, LAFC drove the nail through the coffin with a second goal courtesy of a pair of newcomers. In stoppage time, it was Son who left his mark on the match with some impressively selfless football. With one defender, time, and space in front of him, Son decided against going for the goal, and instead held up the ball as he awaited even more help. It came in the form of loanee, Mathieu Choiniére, who was served up the ball as he ran down the flank, and with a single touch, he was able to get it past the keeper to double the lead and seal the win for LA.

It was a bit of a cathartic type of win for Los Angeles, who as we mentioned, have struggled on the road this year. Not just getting the win, but putting on what was a really good second half performance, especially in the attack. There is no question, the arrival and addition of Son has been a huge spark for the attack, and it couldn’t have come at a better time for the squad with regular season starting to wind down. The team have just one more match on the road before coming home for a brief spell, against FC Dallas. Hopefully the win in New England, gave this team the boost and momentum they needed to really start stacking wins.

I think it’s going to suck watching most of the league play us with a low block every game
