A chance at revenge for LAFC as they welcome Toluca in the second match of phase one in the Leagues Cup. In case you forgot, Toluca were the team to knock out Los Angeles in the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup after a 4-0 thrashing of them in Mexico. Now, LAFC have a chance to get their lick back a bit with a win at home, pushing their point total to five, which would help them keep pace with a chance to advance. Hugo Lloris is back between the posts as Los Angeles start the match with as strong a squad as possible.

The match nearly got off to a dream start for LAFC, as it looked as though they had earned a penalty in the opening 30 seconds of the match. However, a trip to the monitor from the referee ended with the call being overturned, reversing the penalty decision. The sloppy start from the visitors nearly bit them immediately. Toluca did well to tighten up after the early mistake with both sides going for the opening goal early. The first 20 minutes was end-to-end stuff with Toluca getting off three shots with two on target, and while LAFC didn’t have a shot, they were getting into very dangerous positions in the final third far more often than the visitors would have liked.
Toluca were getting close with their efforts as the half went on. The best look they had early was an effort in the 32nd minute after LAFC were dispossessed and Toluca went on the break. The attack ended with Helinho delivering a venomous strike that needed a huge save from Hugo Lloris to keep it scoreless. The best effort for Los Angeles came minutes later courtesy of a long shot from midfielder Mathieu Choinière that beat the keeper, but was stopped by the post. The first half came to an end without either side able to take advantage of mistakes. Both teams were sloppy in the first 45, and while there were several dangerous moments from both, neither side could find the back of the net for the lead.
The second half picked up right where the first left off, with David Martinez getting an early look at the goal, but putting his effort just wide of the target, and it was game on. Through 75 minutes the match was still scoreless and neither side had found the clinical finishing needed to get the winner but with 15 minutes left, LAFC had started to gather momentum. Toluca had nearly twice as many shots but Los Angeles felt like the more dangerous team late in the match. That feeling was proven right with the last attack of the night. In the final moments of stoppage time forward Jacob Shaffelburg put a great ball into the box that was defended fairly well but wasn’t cleared completely. The rebound landed at the feet of Eddie Segura who was outside of the box and with the purest of strikes, hit a curler that got past the keeper and found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into an absolute frenzy. What had looked like another penalty shootout that would almost surely end LAFC’s chances at advancing, was turned into elation as Segura secured the three points at home.

The final whistle blew shortly after the goal, confirming the smash and grab for the home side. The win gives LAFC five points with one more match to go. They will likely need a bit of help as well as winning in their finale to have a shout at advancing, but the win today helps them keep pace with the rest. Now, the team get ready for midweek madness as the group stage wraps up Wednesday, as they host Querétaro FC.
