The goals came fast and early, but not often, this past weekend as LAFC were on the road for the last time during this three-mach road trip, taking on FC Dallas. Going up against the Texas side is always a bit tricky for Los Angeles, and while they didn’t get the win, they did break the recent trend of back-and-forth that usually would have had them losing this match. More importantly, they maintain some pretty good form away from home, and extend their unbeaten run six matches after the 1-1 draw on the road.

As we mentioned, the two sides wasted no time in getting their only goals of the match. It took just six minutes before we saw the first goal, and it was the newest superstar to arrive in Los Angeles, Heung-Min Son, who opened proceedings with a banger. After drawing a free kick, LAFC had a great look with the ball set up just outside the box for the attempt. Son stepped up, took the shot, and it was perfect. The ball lofted beautifully over the wall of defenders, then dipped down at the perfect time, ending up top bins, upper 90, in a place where not even the best goalkeepers on the planet could get to it. It was one of the best ways to score your first goal with a new team, and it gave LAFC the early lead on the road.

That euphoric feeling didn’t last too long unfortunately, as FC Dallas had the response just minutes later. In he 13th minute, a counter saw the LAFC defense get caught out on the back foot giving the build-up just enough space to find Logan Farrington. The Dallas striker didn’t even need a first touch as he just let the ball roll ahead of him, then took his chance at goal. Hugo Lloris went the wrong way, and the ball rolled into the back of the net for the equalizer.

It wasn’t for lack of trying that LAFC didn’t score their second goal, and potential winner. The black & gold finished the match with 20 shots, seven finding the target, over 530 passes on 88% success rate, and earned 11 corners finishing with a 2.01 xG. It was just one of those days where the goal didn’t come. The team close out the three-match road trip with five points of a possible nine, two draws and a win. As we have talked about before, the more important factor has been the how, in terms of the teams performance. They have looked so much better in recent matches, as the attack is getting more threatening, the defense, mostly, has figured out ways to concede fewer goals, and this stretch showed that they are starting to play a lot more lively when away from home.
“We’ve had three tough road games, not easy places to play” said Head Coach Steve Cherundolo when speaking to media after the match. “A lot of travel, some weather, and you come away with five points but also put yourself in position to win these games too. From my perspective, it’s been a very positive road trip.” Now, the team prepare for the brief return home as they get set to take on the newest MLS side, and current Western Conference’s best, San Diego FC.
