Angel City FC were back on the road in a match that was sure to set the tone for the weekend as we approach the final stanza of the 2023 NWSL Regular Season. The team was taking on KC Current in a matchup of teams that were both in need of the win, with sights set on one of the final playoff spots. The home side were holding onto the six match unbeaten run coming into this one, while Angel City were coming in with nine without a loss. These two sides love the fireworks, so we are in for a treat.

Both teams had their feet on the gas coming into this one. The shots were flying early and often, with both sides nearly finding the goal to give them the lead. NWSL debutant and Angel City FC goalkeeper, Angelina Anderson, passed a few early tests sent her way courtesy of the home side.
Through just 25 minutes there had been 15 total shots, with three finding the target. The home side had the advantage with ten of those shots, but both sides were asking questions of the opposing keepers early. ACFC turned it up to finish the half, letting off a few more attempts while keeping KC from getting any more shots of their own. The half ended scoreless, with both teams heading into break looking for ways to breakthrough first. With options for both teams on the bench, this match was headed for a wild finish.
The second half was going much like the first half. Both teams were finding opportunities, both teams were doing well defensively, and both teams were relying on great goalkeeping efforts. However, it was Angel City to breakthrough first courtesy of a 66th minute goal from Jasmyne Spencer. The forward turned defender showed the attacking prowess and took on the defender for an initial pass that was deflected back to her. She got just enough on it to finish it on the tough angle for the lead.

Angel City were close to adding on several more, but AD Franch had other ideas, doing everything and then some to keep her side in the match, only down a goal heading into the final ten minutes. Despite getting off a few more shots, KC couldn’t get past the Angel City defense in the final moments of the match, and ACFC see out the win and take the full three points. The win puts them even on points with OL Reign for the final playoff spot, with the latter maintaining a tie-break advantage on goal-differential.
Just the fact Angel City are within striking distance this late in the season, given how they started the year, is outstanding. Now, we see if they can finish the job over the course of the last four matches. The team remain on the road in the Midwest, taking on Chicago Red Stars on Sept. 17th. Game on.
