When you gaze upon the NWSL standings, three teams stand out amongst the rest as the only remaining teams unbeaten and unblemished to start the new season. Kansas City Current, Orlando Pride, and Angel City FC are the last of the unbeaten and while one of those teams definitely looks and feels a lot different than the other two, they are all without loss all the same. Today, Angel City take that unbeaten record to Houston as they pay a visit to the Dash, in a bit of a family reunion of sorts with plenty of familiar faces around.

It’s only been three matches, but the Houston Dash are looking a lot better than last year. A full spectrum of results, with a record of 1-1-1 (W-D-L), the Dash so far pass the eye test but also, are trending to have a better goal tally and defensive record than they did last season after finishing dead last in the league. Its matches like this one that will be the determining factor in whether they will be a team that keeps this up all season, home matches against clubs also looking to find their footing early in the year. Historically, this matchup is about as even as they come, with Houston holding a win, Angel City holding a win and four draws between them.
Speaking of eye tests, Angel City FC come into this match fresh off their win at home against Seattle Reign. While they may not look like the most impressive of the unbeaten teams in the NWSL, it is impressive that they are unbeaten, so that counts for something. In all seriousness, this is a team that just needs to find some consistency as they continue to tread water awaiting a permanent head coach to arrive. Just on pure talent, will, ability, and veteran leadership within the squad, this is a team capable of keeping pace with the upper-middle section of the league, and showed it last time out. Now that the International Break is done, the team look to keep that momentum going, taking their winning ways on the road.
Angel City will have two big factors to focus on this afternoon. The first, breaking down the Houston defense. This might be one of those matches where you will need to let it fly from range a few times just to test out Campbell and to test out the luck. The Dash will be hard to break down directly, so counting on walking it in will be a bold strategy, unless you’re also counting on a defensive error. The other factor is the ‘get back’ factor. There are several players, including striker Messiah Bright, who once played for Los Angeles, and as Paige Nielsen proved last season, would love nothing more than to break hearts and take the three points at home today. The defense did really well in the win, holding the Reign to just two shots on target, and another performance like that would go a long way in securing the win.
How To Watch
