UPDATE: Tonight’s match has been postponed due to severe weather and flooding in the Central Texas area. A new date will be announced at a later time. Our thoughts are with those affected by the flooding in the area.
Being as blunt as possible, it’s been an awful first half of the season for LAFC. As they sit right at the halfway mark of their season, with 17 matches played, they are far from where they typically are, and even further from where they want to be. Coming into today’s clash the team are barely hanging on to a playoff spot, they have struggled to find any semblance of consistency in their attack, their defense while solid most of the season, is still prone to conceding an early goal or two, and they have still only won one match on the road across all competitions, all season. The silver lining to it all, is that due to the Club World Cup and Champions League runs throughout this year, the team sit with several matches in hand giving them just a bit more wiggle room than the rest of the conference. That said, if there ever was a time to right the ship, get back to winning ways, find consistency, and make a push for some of the higher seeds, it is absolutely now.

Today is the first of what is just two away matches for LAFC in the month of July, as the team take the fairly short trip to Texas, taking on Austin FC. A battle of the mid-table sides as Austin sit tied on points with the black & gold, but with more matches played and two places behind in the standings. In their last five matches Austin has won two, lost two, and drawn once. They have conceded six goals and scored five in that span. They hold a record of 4-2-4 (W-L-D) at home, however, it’s LAFC that holds the historical advantage over their Western Conference opponents.
This will be the 13th meeting between these two sides, with LAFC having won seven of those meetings. Austin FC came away with the win the last time these two met earlier this year when LA was at home, but that was their only win in their last seven meetings. Now, LAFC will look to return that favor by coming away with three points of their own in Austin’s house. The black & gold will be missing goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and defender Maxime Chanot who are both out with injuries. The biggest key for Los Angeles is going to be the attack. With Giroud now gone, even with his lack of production, that is another option in attack no longer available. Denis Bouanga is going to have to do the heavy lifting, with perhaps some help from the likes of Nathan Ordaz and Jeremey Ebobisse, if the team hope to come away with their second road win of the year.
