Don’t look now, but Angel City FC are on a four match unbeaten run. The craziest part, the form hasn’t really improved as much as the team have just done the little things better over recent weeks. Whatever the case, the team have put themselves right into the playoff race and the results couldn’t have come at a better time. Now, the team face a season-defining road trip that will see them play away from home for the next four matches, starting tonight with a battle against a Utah Royal side looking to improve on their top four standing in the table.

The Utah Royals continue to prove that in the NWSL, a club can go from bottom-dweller, to title contender in the span of a year. Just last season the Royals were finishing near the bottom of the table, out of the playoffs, and looking like a club players should avoid. A strong offseason saw them make key additions, a philosophy change and now they are a team that nobody will want to see in the fall. They currently sit in fourth, winners in three of their last five matches. Utah are led by Chloe Lacasse up front, who leads the in goals (7) and assists (10). Lacasse is also the player who scored the lone goal the last time these two met back in May, boosting her team to the win, their first-ever against Angel City. Now, they look to further cement their title hopes with a win at home, securing three points and the season sweep over LA.
Angel City may not be playing their best football, but lately they have been finding ways to get wins and salvage points, which is all that really matters sometimes. As of this writing, the team are just one point from that last playoff spot, and with Seattle losing last night, they could end the night as high as seventh place with a win tonight. That’s the key moving forward for Los Angeles, winning. Much easier said than done, but aside from missing midfielders Jun Endo and Hina Sugita, who they’ve been without essentially the entire season, this is the healthiest the team has been in months and it couldn’t be at a better time with playoffs around the corner. The team have won three of their last five, coming into tonight with a four match unbeaten run under their belt. SveindÃs and Maiara will be leaned on to continue scoring goals for the club, while veteran Sarah Gorden anchors the defense. In a lot of ways, tonight is the start of a new season, a sprint to the finish. Time for Angel City to set the tone and show us that this project is still capable of competing for championships.
