It’s always great when you get to see all of your hard work being recognized. For Angel City FC, the true recognition of all of their hard work this offseason will come in the form of, hopefully, competing for the NWSL Championship this winter. However, even though we are just a few weeks into the new season, the club has already started to receive their flowers for their hot start to the year, coming in the form of NWSL Monthly awards. Forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir and Head Coach Alex Straus have been named the NWSL Player of the Month and NWSL Coach of the Month, respectively, for the month of March.

Ever since his arrival in the middle of the season last year, Alex Straus has made it clear that this is all just a process. Dynasties aren’t built overnight, and as someone who has built a powerhouse in women’s soccer already, he knew the project at hand when he agreed to coach Angel City FC. After a full offseason, a bit of a shakeup with the roster, and some time to implement his style and philosophy, we have seen just how good things can be for the club. After just three matches the team sit atop the NWSL standings, having won all three matches, scoring plenty of goals in the process, winning by a combined scoreline of 9-2. The early win streak is already the best in club history, making Angel City just the eighth team in league history to start a season with three straight wins. Not only that, but for two weeks in a row, he has named the youngest starting XI league history.
With 2 goals and 1 assist, Sveindís Jónsdóttir sets a new club record for goal contributions in a single game and earns #AngelCityFC’s Player of the Match for #BAYvLA.

Throughout the offseason, one thing was on the mind of Angel City forward Sveindís Jónsdóttir, doing more in front of goal. After a handful of missed opportunities last season, finishing the season not having impressed the way she wanted to upon her arrival to the NWSL, the Icelandic attacker came into 2026 looking to show everyone just how deadly she can be and so far she has done just that and then some. Sveindís has had goal contributions in every match so far, starting off the year with not one, but two assists to help push her side to the 4-0 win over Chicago Stars at home. She followed that up with a career outing on the road, setting a club record for single-game goal contributions by a single player, when she not only served up an assist, but bagged a brace with two goals in the team’s 3-1 win over their rivals. In the last win, she sparked the comeback over Houston Dash, scoring the equalizer in the 47th minute. It has been a dream start for the young forward as she makes good on her promise to do more for her team.

While the longterm goals for this club are a lot bigger than monthly accolades, it’s an early proof of concept. This is a team that came into this season with a lot of self-imposed expectations as they looked to finally turn the corner from middling lower-table club, to championship contenders. At the very least, they want to find themselves comfortably in the postseason come season’s end. As the saying goes, start as you mean to go, and from the looks of it, Angel City have started off the season looking like the best team in the league.
