With just a few more hours before the deadline for the finalized roster for the upcoming 2024 season, Angel City FC put pen to paper and make it official with one of their draft picks. The club announced today the signing of 2024 NWSL Draft pick, defender, Madison Curry. Taken with the 51st overall selection, the Orange County native looks to make Angel City her home for the future.
“I’m so excited to officially join the team,” said Curry in a statement. “I’ve been here since the draft in January and it means the world to me to be so close to home. I’m a Southern California-native and I couldn’t have imagined getting through this time without such a supportive system with the team and the coaching staff. I am really looking forward to what I know this team can accomplish this season.”
Perhaps not one of the household names taken in this year’s draft, Curry comes with plenty of pedigree. She was selected to the First Team All-Ivy League three times, was selected to the United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-American and All-East Region Second Team in the 2023 season, and as an OC native Curry was selected to the US Youth Soccer Region 4 Olympic Development Program (ODP) team in 2014, 2015, and 2016.
“Madi impressively came into our professional environment and never looked back, ” stated ACFC General Manager Angela Hucles Mangano in a statement. “She’s proven that she belongs in a very short period of time, showing versatility and a willingness to do whatever it takes to support our club and win. We are thrilled that Madi is a part of this club.”
The draftee will be in great hands with a great opportunity to grow alongside some of the best not just in the NWSL, but on the planet. The likes of Sarah Gorden, Ali Riley, and Paige Nielsen will be able to lend their expertise and impart veteran knowledge, while fellow young defender Gisele Thompson will be that iron that helps sharpen Curry’s skills. Curry’s high football IQ and solid work-rate will make her a nice option of the bench, especially as the team gets deep into the season and needs that fresh leg relief from time to time.
