At this point, it’s about Pride. It’s a rare Thursday night matchup for Angel City FC as they get set to host Orlando Pride this evening. The top-ranked Orlando are looking to get back to their own winnings ways after a decent, though not stellar, run of form lately. As for Los Angeles, we are still waiting for that first win under new head coach Alex Straus, as the project rolls on. Silver lining, the team have been playing far better in recent matches, avoiding what would usually be losses, so maybe tonight we are in for some home cooked magic at BMO.

Orlando come into this match sitting in third place, but watching their chances and hopes at another NWSL Shield, slip away. That said, they also come in looking to get back to winning ways before they watch their playoff hopes slip away too. While firmly on the right side of that line, anything can happen as they sit just eight points clear of last team in, Gotham FC. Pride have won just one of their last five matches, with the last four ending in either a loss or draw. They have also seen their goals slowly start to dry up over recent matches. However, you can’t come into this one hoping that trend continues. The last time these two met in Orlando, it was the Pride that came away with the 3-2 victory. In fact, Orlando have only seen victories in Los Angeles, wining all three times they have come to visit, with all three wins shutouts, a combined 5-0 scoreline. Marta will be the player to watch in this match, as Barbra Banda is ruled out for tonight, so she will not be available for the visitors.
Angel City come into this match riding a two-match unbeaten run. Yes, both are draws, but as we mentioned before, the fact they have avoided what is usually losses for them, is a win in itself. By now, you know the narrative, the team hasn’t won since early May and at this point, it’s less about their playoff chances and more about their pride. Orlando have never lost to Angel City in Los Angeles, and now would be a great time to change that trend. The defense has been playing a lot better in recent matches, so perhaps we can see the attack follow suit. Unfortunately, the team will be without Jun Endo who suffered a lower leg injury that will keep her out for proceedings. Forwards Riley Tiernan, Alyssa Thompson, and Sveindís Jónsdóttir will need to find that chemistry fast tonight if the team have any hope of coming away with three points. They have been tantalizingly close to finding that connection, with the feeling that once they do, floodgates should open.
