After a pretty long international window, NWSL action has returned for Angel City FC! The last time we saw the team, they had their win streak snapped at the hands of a late goal on the road, taking on Orlando Pride. Despite the loss, the team didn’t look too bad and maintained their aggressive mentality going forward. Now, we get to see how improved their mentality is this season, facing their first real obstacles of the season. They are back home for what will be the first of three in Los Angeles, welcoming a returning Sophia Wilson and her Portland Thorns.

Portland Thorns come into Los Angeles sitting second in the table at this early stage of the season. Having played one more match than Angel City (5), they have won three, drawn one, and suffered one loss. Interestingly, all of their wins have come as shutouts, making that first goal in this matchup all the more important. The real big news for Portland though, is the return of superstar forward, Sophia Wilson, who made her return to the United States Women’s National Team during this last international window. She joins an already potent attack featuring midfielder Olivia Moultrie, and forwards Pietra Tordin and Reilyn Turner, each of which have at least two goals so far this season. Safe to say Angel City’s defense will have their work cut out for them in this one.
Speaking of Angel City, the team come into this match fresh off a loss but still in the middle of what has been their strongest start to a season ever. Not just with wins, but having finally unlocked the attack, scoring goals with some consistency. Though it’s only been four matches to start the year, they have won three and lost their most recent during a trip to Orlando. Now, they get ready to take on a team they are all too familiar with in Portland. As we mentioned, this will be the first match of three that they will play at home, making this a real opportunity to feed off the atmosphere and use it to get back to winning ways. While the biggest key to victory for Angel City will be keeping Portland’s attack from finding rhythm, the other key will be continuing to find rhythm themselves. It can sometimes be a bit awkward after long breaks, so starting fast and putting pressure on the opposing goal will be crucial for coming away from this match with a win.
