We talked about it before, but this road trip is the most brutal stretch of the season for Angel City FC. Not only are they fighting for one of the last playoff spots, but this road trip will see them take on three teams that are already in fairly comfortable playoff positions, closing out the trip with a visit to Denver Summit, who are fighting Angel City for the same couple of spots on the right side of the playoff line. Tonight, however, is the second match of the long road trip, up against a team that sits in third place currently, having played in the NWSL Championship match just a season ago, Washington Spirit.

Washington come into tonight winners in three of their last five matches. They will be fresh off being on both ends of 3-0 results, first the losers in a meeting with Denver Summit, then bouncing back in their most recent result, a three goal shutout win over Chicago Stars. While Gotham FC seem to be pulling away from the rest of the league in that top spot, Spirit sit in third place but still need results to ensure they finish in a top spot in the table. Spirit will be dealing with injuries, something they have gotten through all season. They will be without star midfielder Leicy Santos, but this team will still be a very dangerous opponent with the likes of forwards Trinity Rodman and Sofia Cantore as well as Ashley Hatch and Gift Monday coming off the bench. The real focus will be on goalkeeper Sandy MacIver, who has had more than a handful of outstanding performances this season, and at home, will likely be looked upon to keep out an Angel City attack that looks like its starting to click.
Speaking of Angel City, it has been a very quiet, very incredible run they are on as of late. They have lose just twice in their last 14 matches, coming into tonight with a five match unbeaten run with four wins during that stretch, fresh off back-to-back wins that has seen them catapult themselves into sixth place. Now comes the hard part, keeping that playoff spot with a murderer’s row of opponents coming down the line. The last three meetings has seen Angel City get a win and two draws, with their last visit to DC resulting in a dramatic 4-3 win. They will be looking for more of the same today as they look to not only extend their unbeaten run, but secure a result that will only further cement their spot in the postseason. Obviously, wins are the most important goal, but at this moment, every point counts, especially on the road against teams that were in the NWSL Championship game not even a year ago.
