The wait is finally over, even if for the first time in years it felt like the NWSL offseason flew by. Angel City FC have prepared, gone through some preseason matches, and even enjoyed a full offseason under new Head Coach Alex Straus and now, it’s time to put it all together in their home opener against Chicago Stars. The vibes throughout preseason training have been immaculate as the team come into the 2026 season with a retooled roster, refreshed mindset, and renewed hope that this year is finally the season they take that next step in becoming consistent postseason contenders.

While both sides will be looking to make a statement to start the new NWSL season, no team will be looking to change their fortunes more than Chicago Stars. The midwest club had the unwanted distinction of being the worst team in the league last year, finishing with 20 points, sitting at the very bottom of the table. Chicago most recently made a move to acquire forward Jordyn Huitema from Seattle Reign, but the biggest news for the club is the highly anticipated return of Mallory Swanson who missed last season on maternity leave. Pair her with the rising star that is Jameese Joseph, and the Stars are very much in position to, at the very least, finish the season with a lot more wins than they saw last season.
Angel City come into their season opener looking to make a statement not just to the rest of the league, but to themselves and their fans. This is a club that has seen the last few seasons end in disappointing fashion, often hovering close to the playoff line, only to fall short and finish in the bottom section of the standings. With new Head Coach Alex Straus set for his first full season at the helm, there is a definite sense that if there was ever a time for the club to take that next step, it’s now. With several new additions, a rising crop of college talent, and a core of young players looking to take the next step in their personal developments, this squad has its eyes set on the postseason come Fall. First, they have a tremendous opportunity to get the season started off on the right foot as this is the first of what will be five of their opening seven matches at home. One of their away matches will be Bay FC, making that six of their first seven matches to start the season played in California. A chance to really take advantage of the minimal travel, and build some momentum to carry them through the entirety of this campaign.
How To Watch
Nothing hits quite like a season opener and this one feels extra special as Angel City FC get started on their fifth season against Chicago Stars, with kickoff set for 4pm PST from BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California. The match will be broadcast live and can be streamed on the league’s newest streaming partner, Victory+. The match can also be heard via iHeartRadio (ENG), as well as KWKW La Primera 1330 AM (SPA).
