In some ways, this season for Angel City FC has felt like several seasons all wrapped into one. Once again they don’t finish the season with the manager they started with. But also, once again, an interim head coach has come in and done just enough to spark a run that has seen Angel City go unbeaten in their last nine outings, secure a spot in the playoffs, and now on the final match day of the regular season, have a legitimate chance at getting home field to open up the postseason. While they will need help, they just need to keep doing what has gotten them here, win.

Expansion side Boston Legacy may have seen their postseason hopes ended weeks ago, they aren’t coming into Los Angeles just to play the role of Washington Generals. While they can’t play spoiler too much with Angel City already securing a playoff spot, they can be annoying and prevent ACFC from possibly getting home field advantage. Not only that, they will be looking for some revenge after losing at home to Los Angeles in their first-ever meeting just a couple of months ago. This will be the first trip to Los Angeles for Legacy, who get to enjoy the hospitality of Dignity Health Sports Park, with their BMO visit delayed a season.
There are three key battles happening in the NWSL coming into what will be a very chaotic Decision Day. First, there is the three-way battle between Denver Summit FC, North Carolina Courage, and Seattle Reign, for the final playoff spot. Then, you have the battle for top spot in the table along with winning the NWSL Shield. Currently San Diego Wave and defending champions Gotham FC are fighting for that honor. Lastly, you have the battle Angel City are in, a chance at home field advantage. The team come into today sitting in fifth but if they want to host at least one playoff match, they need to get into the top four.
Kansas City Current sit in fourth, just one point better than Angel City, while Washington Spirit are in third, just three points away. The best news, Angel City currently have the best Goal Differential in NWSL, meaning they win the first tiebreaker should they finish equal on points with anyone in the standings. First and foremost, they have to win. A draw, while possible, likely wont get them into fourth. A win makes that path a lot more open. Next, they need Kansas City to drop points. Again, presuming Angel City win, a Current draw would see them fall to fifth while Los Angeles gets to host a postseason match. The team could get as high as third, should the Spirit lose their match and Angel City win, they would be even on points, but with a far better Goal Differential, Los Angeles would get into third.
And, breathe. That is a lot, yes. Most importantly, the team have secured a spot in the playoffs and no matte what happens, they can’t finish lower than seventh. Which means today will be a party either way, despite the very high likelihood of rain. As for the match itself, expect Angel City to come out with a strong starting lineup. Don’t surprised to see players come off at halftime or see limited minutes, but expect the team to come out strong and at least go for it all in the first half. The NWSL regular season may be coming to a close, but this feels like just the start of a magical run for Angel City.
