One of those Friday nights in Los Angeles sports that fills the soul if you’re a sports fan. On a night where the Lakers were at home as playoffs approached, and the Dodgers were set to receive yet another World Series ring, Angel City FC were at home against Houston Dash in what was a top-of-table clash that may have caught everyone by surprise this year. A chance to take steps forward in continuing to make BMO Stadium a fortress, and a chance for Los Angeles to really solidify themselves atop the table early on in the 2026 campaign. With the sky showing off its Sol Rosa sunset, and the vibes high, the atmosphere was peak as Angel City looked to once again, put on a great performance.

Both teams came into this match with something to prove. Both sides wanting to show the early season success wasn’t a fluke, but rather, a statement of intent for the season ahead. Houston came out with a high press that looked less likely to be a threat in attack, and more just a tactic to prevent Angel City from using their speed on counter attacks. Despite not looking the more likely to score early on, it was indeed the visitors who struck first. A decent ball into the box resulted in an awkward first effort that was headed more upwards than towards goal, but it was enough to throw off the Angel City defense and allowed Houston midfielder Maggie Graham to clean up the mess with a headed effort that found the back of the net.
A total team effort from Houston 👏

Now came the first true test of the season for Angel City. Down a goal early, at home, and down the first time this season, was a chance to see just how this team would respond to the adversity. The early goal served as the injection of energy the visitors needed as they continued to apply pressure on the Angel City defense for the better part of the first half. Through 35 minutes, it was a rough one for Angel City. It felt like every call was going against them, they struggled to get the ball out of their own half, and Houston had successfully gotten in their heads just enough to make it annoying for the players on the pitch. The goal at this point was to see out the half, restart at halftime, and look to turn it around without conceding a second.
The team were able to get to halftime without conceding a second goal, giving them the chance they needed to reset. Angel City head coach Alex Straus must have given the greatest halftime speech known in sports because Los Angeles came out for the second half with anger in their hearts and violence on their minds. Just two minutes into the half, Sveindís Jónsdóttir saw just enough room from outside of the box to let it fly and did just that, unloading an absolute rocket that flew past Campbell and into the back of the net for her third goal of the season.

As if the quick equalizer wasn’t enough, Angel City decided they were going to snatch the lead from Houston faster than T.I. snatched NuNu’s chain back. Just two minutes after the first goal, it was Maiara Niehues who was able to get her head on the end of a perfect ball into the box from Gisele Thompson. The header deflected off the back of a Houston defender, and ended up clattering into the feet of another as it crossed the line. Not even five minutes into the second half, and Angel City had equalized and taken the lead as they began to regain control of the match.

After the initial shock wore off, Houston settled back in, and slowed things down once again. Angel City weren’t content with the goal lead however, continuing to push the issue as they went on the hunt for a third. Through 80 minutes, the two goals were enough to keep the lead, but Angel City were in full on ‘defend for our lives’ mode with Houston continuing to stack up corner kicks and find enough space to get shots off to test Angelina Anderson.
As the time ran down, the match began to get more and more physical as the Dash became desperate and Angel City not backing down or giving an inch. Tensions rose, whistle seemed to blow every few minutes, as the home side looked to see out the win and keep their place atop the NWSL standings. After a very rough final few minutes, the final whistle blew and Angel City were able to do something they struggled to do the last few seasons, comeback in a match and find a way to win. The 2-1 result makes it three wins running as they continue to build on their newfound identity in 2026. Now, the team turn focus to another big test as they hit the road to take on a very strong Orlando Pride side that will be looking to hand Los Angeles their first loss of the season.
